Moonwatcher is often described as a particularly strange cat to be around. Like most ShadowClan cats, their hours of operation are most often throughout the night. However, due to their sensitivity to light, they rarely if ever are seen out and about during the day, lingering in the shade of camp. Should they ever be required to travel during the day, they require a warrior to accompany them.[break] Though medicine cats abide by different rules from all other Clan cats, their welcoming and friendly attitude towards cats from other Clans has often gotten them into trouble - though whether or not they succeed at making such friendships is another thing entirely, as their favorite pastime outside of their role is studying and collecting insects. Many injured or ill ShadowClan cats have suffered the misfortune of listening to Moonwatcher ramble on and on about the latest pawful of rolypolies they have brought back to camp, forced to watch them scuttle about Moonwatcher's "races."[break] As a result, they are often seen as silly and non-serious, a reputation that has lead them to be disliked by their more dutiful of Clanmates. However, none can argue that, despite their oddities, they are a talented and devoted medicine cat. Watching them at work when treating a patient is like seeing another cat take their place entirely - their nonsensical ramblings are silenced and their brows draw tight in concentration, silent and methodical with where they place poultices, how they wrap wounds in cobwebs, and exactly what order herbs should be eaten in.[break][break] HISTORY[break] Moonkit and their brother Swankit are born at the beginning of greenleaf to a pair of mollies named Magpiecall and Asterplume. After seasons upon seasons upon seasons of trying (and failing) for kits, the older warriors are relieved that their days of grieving their futures as parents are over, and welcome their two bundles of joy into the world with eager delight. Asterplume is an affectionate and doting mother, perhaps a little over-anxious as she realizes this is likely the first and only litter she will ever bear, and thus fussing over her two children with a keenly overprotective attitude.[break] Swankit is especially adoring and awe-inspired by their other mother, Magpiecall. A well-respected warrior within ShadowClan, he stumbles and tumbles after her every pawstep in camp, claiming that he, too, will pursue the path of a noble warrior. Moonkit is less impressed by her battle feats, and instead occupies themself with the stray beetles that occasionally occupy the nursery, pouncing on them and admiring the colors that reflect off of their elytra.[break] Perhaps their lack of interest in joining Swankit's parading behind Magpiecall is due to the fact that they struggle outside of the nursery at times. They squint and stumble through the few rays of sunlight that filter through the forest canopy. Moosebelly takes note of this - they are far more oversensitive to light than most cats, and must linger in the dark. "A fortunate thing for a ShadowClan cat," Moosebelly tells them, "to be bathed in darkness."[break] They spend more time with Moosebelly in the medicine cat den as a result of the frequent migraines and headaches they get when it is too bright for them to bear. To his mild disdain, they tell him about the various beetles they've seen during their time spent in the nursery, about the millipedes that pass through Moosebelly's den at night, the roaches they've seen skittering around stale prey before it's removed from the fresh-kill pile.[break] After moons of watching uninterested kits pursue the path of a warrior, it seemed as if Moosebelly had finally found his apprentice in Moonkit. Come their apprentice ceremony, Swanpaw is assigned to a warrior mentor, and Moonpaw promises to train diligently under Moosebelly. They often sneak out of their den during the day to find their way into Swanpaw's nest, however - they miss their brother's company when going to sleep, and long for the comfort of sharing body heat with him, oftentimes found by Moosebelly come nightfall curled around him.[break] Where Swanpaw thrives under warrior training, Moonpaw struggles with their own path learning to be a medicine cat. Though they truly enjoy the opportunity they've been offered, they find it difficult to adjust, given the speed at which Moosebelly insists on training them. They review herbs - their names, their scents, their lookalikes, their uses - every quarter moon. Sometimes Moosebelly deceives them, offering them herbs claiming to be one while they really are the other, testing both his apprentice's knowledge and their willingness to question him. He creates fake omens, leaves things like feathers, shells, even dead prey around to test how Moonpaw might interpret them, if they would question their authenticity, if they would doubt they really were from StarClan. To his surprise, they are quite in tune to their spiritual side - they even question his place in creating fake omens, state that he might be giving their Clanmates false hope with trickery like that.[break] It isn't until Swanpaw gets injured late into his warrior training that Moosebelly feels as though he finally makes progress with Moonpaw. Their sibling suffering from an infection, wounds left from a border skirmish just the moon prior, the guidance Moosebelly offers sticks with them throughout the rest of their training. "This is your sibling," Moosebelly says as they sniffle against their brother's side, eagerly nudging him, desperate for him to wake up from his infected trance, "but you must put your emotions aside to truly provide the best treatment for your Clanmates." As Moonpaw took deep breaths, trying to calm, they honed in on what Moosebelly had taught them, the instructions he murmured into their ear as they worked on Swanpaw's treatment, night after night. After a few nightfalls, Swanpaw was perking up, moving around, acting like his usual self - this focus was what Moosebelly had been after. Swanpaw is named a warrior just a quarter moon later, Swansky, and Moonpaw lets out a sigh of relief, and perhaps even a sense of gratefulness, knowing that they helped him make it to his warrior ceremony.[break] It feels wrong, but Moonpaw can't help but be relieved when Stormstar passes the following moon. All those battles with WindClan had been due to his near-obsessive vendetta against them, the origin of which nearly nobody could tell them. It pours for the following quarter moon after his death - while their Clanmates say it is a sign of leaf-fall on its way, Moonpaw can't help but feel like maybe, just maybe, it was Stormstar up in StarClan, raining down (ha) one final storm against the forest before parting for good.[break] When they are finally given their full medicine cat name, it is bittersweet. Moosebelly has grown fond of them, and they feel the same, but they know that with their name, they will no longer share a den with them. He will finally pursue the warrior training he always desired, and leave them alone to their duties, even though they still feel so, so unprepared. He names them Moonwatcher, insists that they have always been blessed by StarClan (they know he doesn't believe in them, but thank him anyway), and reassures them he will join their side when needed, that he is not fully leaving them alone, that no matter how much he wishes he could have been a warrior from the start, he will not cast aside all he has learned.[break] No matter what, they know they will not walk this path alone.
