Once a curious and mouthy apprentice, Pantherstride has refined these two traits into keen observation and wit. Her talents lie in her smarts, excelling in battle, knowing how to use her surroundings to her advantage in a flash. Her silver tongue can ease tensions at the border before fights break out, but it can just as quickly turn sharp to spew deep-hitting insults. She has a tendency to be egotistical and loathes being wrong, tunnel-visioned in her focus and narrow-minded when it comes to trying to open her eyes to other beliefs and ideologies.[break] HISTORY[break] Alongside her sisters, Robinshade is a fierce molly known throughout RiverClan, one of Zinniastar's daughters surviving their mother to preserve her legacy. She expects her kits to be just as brilliant and sharp-minded as their grandmother once was - Pantherkit, a little black molly whose cries pierce all of RiverClan camp, Burnetkit, a ginger tom who eagerly shoves his sisters out of the way to nurse, and Kestrelkit, a tortoiseshell molly whose mews don't end with the fall of night. Born in the dawn of greenleaf, Robinshade views her kits as her pride, and tell them grand stories of Zinniastar, a valiant warrior and noble leader who she promises will surely visit them in their dreams to bless their futures as warriors.[break] With bright open eyes and wobbly but confident steps, Pantherkit and her siblings begin exploring the nursery at their first moon. Daring and adventurous, their first attempt to exit the nursery and into the vast space of camp is met with tragedy - a fox invades RiverClan camp, and finds easy prey in vulnerable kits. Unwilling to allow Pantherkit, her siblings, or any of the other kittens in the nursery fall victim to its greed, warriors in the camp defend the nursery with their life - Nectarshine, the judge, being one of them. Witnesses to such a horrid affair, the three kits develop an intense fear of foxes, with nightmares following them nightly well into their kithood.[break] Like her siblings, Pantherkit is in awe of their deceased grandmother, and often looks to Alderstar with a curious gaze, wondering how the tom would escape her grandmother's shadow. She pesters senior warriors and elders to hear stories of what Zinniastar was like - would she have drowned Cardinalstar a hundred times over to protect her kits every time? Had she a presence even those from the other Clans could not help but respect? Did she truly trust that Alderstar had the right paws to leave RiverClan in? Sometimes, and much to Robinshade's embarrassment, she even asked him to be her mentor when the time came for her and her siblings to be apprenticed.[break] She is not, in fact, named Alderstar's apprentice, much to her disappointment. Her mentor is a cat named Slatesplash, a warrior getting up there in age but still as spry as the day they were apprenticed. They are somewhat kitlike in behavior which starkly contrasts the many moons that they have seen, overly eager as if they were a young warrior being assigned their first apprentice, something that Pantherpaw finds slightly off-putting. Their first day out is spent exploring RiverClan territory, and Slatesplash seems more eager to go prancing about the water pools and trying to get Pantherpaw to lighten up rather than diving straight into training. She tries to embrace their energy, really - she forces smiles, she indulges in scaring off all of the frogs in the ponds as she bounces from pool to pool, but by the end of the day, she is mentally drained. She complains somewhat bitterly to Burnetpaw and Kestrelpaw, who seem jealous of her fun-loving mentor rather than equally disdainful.[break] A moon goes by, and Pantherpaw finds herself more than frustrated with her mentor. She feels as if she has fallen behind from her siblings - she is still practicing her hunting crouch while they are already masterful enough in their basic skills to join hunting patrols. She constantly loses in spars with her siblings, caught off guard by basic techniques she has yet to learn, and simmers in her anger each night, tail lashing back and forth in her nest as she struggles to fall asleep with such a racing mind ("Pantherpaw, can you stop hitting me with your tail? Every time I'm about to drift off, you wake me back up," Burnetpaw tries to joke, but she only hisses at him).[break] "I think Slatesplash is holding me back on purpose," Pantherpaw confesses to Robinshade one night over shared prey, miserable. "Burnetpaw and Kestrelpaw are making so much more progress. Why aren't they taking my training seriously?!"[break] She hadn't expected her mother to take her complaints to Alderstar - it was humiliating, being pulled aside by him one sunrise as he asked if her her mother's reiteration of her words was true. Although having a new mentor assigned to her was what she truly wanted, she was reluctant to admit as much, let alone to the very leader of the Clan. Would Alderstar make himself her mentor, like she had initially wished as a kit? Or would he see her belief that she and Slatesplash were mismatched as uncooperativeness? Worse, would he see it as her questioning his decisions? Would Zinniastar approve of such behavior from her? Despite all her fretting, he reassigned her to a molly named Tawnyoak.[break] Unlike Slatesplash, Tawnyoak was stern, almost to the point of being unfriendly. Despite the lack of doting like Slatesplash had been with her, Pantherpaw felt as if Tawnyoak truly understood that her apprentice desired to be challenged, and thus presented her with them time after time again. Obstacle after obstacle - practicing hopping across the stones scattered across the river between RiverClan and ThunderClan territory, hunting land prey more often than fishing, having her spar with apprentices larger than her and reviewing where she went wrong. It was new. It was different. It was wonderful. Pantherpaw found herself adoring Tawnyoak's mentoring style, despite the guilt she felt every time she met Slatesplash's gaze across camp. They had just been... too silly for her, as, well, silly as it sounded. She felt as if she was finally catching up to her siblings where they were in their training - finally she could take Burnetpaw down in battle without him taking pity on her and letting her win here and there, finally she could out-hunt Kestrelpaw, plucking up prey from the marsh while her sister sat and waited for fish to return after initial scares and shadows.[break] Her confidence was through the roof. She played with kits poking out of the nursery, finding time to brag about all she had been learning, showing off her skills and offering to teach them a thing or two once they were bigger. Challenging older apprentices to races in the river, nagging Tawnyoak to take her out more and more, even daring to tell Alderstar he had now picked a mentor too good for her, and that she was now exceeding past all of the other apprentices with ease.[break] Finally came the day that she was to be named a warrior alongside her siblings. What would she be named? What talent of her many would Alderstar choose to recognize? Would it suit her? Her siblings were named first - Burnetsting, quick to deliver a flurry of blows, and Kestrelscale, a speedy swimmer who could fish even in harsh water conditions with ease. Pantherstride, she was named, her heart swelling with pride, for her elegance and masterful stamina, all thanks to Tawnyoak recognizing her skill and drawing it out of her.[break] Pantherstride takes own her newfound independence and responsibilities by storm. She enjoys accompanying older warriors on their patrols, hearing their stories of battle prowess, enjoying their tales of techniques lost to time. She even dares to better acquaint herself with Alderstar, who had once seemed so far away from herself, no longer idolized but placed upon the same footing as her - or rather, herself on the same footing as him, a warrior, an equal. Her silver tongue is quick to make her popular among camp, and her strategic mind that reveals itself with each border dispute has her placed at the forefront of any battle. She finds relief in being trusted, even if her smart remarks and occasional sass earn her swatted ears.[break] She finds honor in being given one of Alderstar's kits as an apprentice - Oriolepaw is sweet and delicate, not nearly as ambitious as her brother Newtpaw, but Pantherstride refuses to slack on training the way Slatesplash had once done with her. She can tell that Oriolepaw doesn't like her at first - but perhaps being made vulnerable in front of her is what strengthens their bond. Just two moons into Oriolepaw's apprenticeship, a fox is found on RiverClan territory while she and her apprentice are patrolling with some other warriors. Usually quick to take charge and bark orders on what each warrior should do to best utilize their individual talents and advantages, Pantherstride freezes in terror, feeling so very much like the kit she was long ago when Nectarshine had given her life to protect her and her siblings from the fox that invaded camp. Unable to get herself together, she is lucky that the other patrolling warriors are able to drive the fox away before it harms anyone grievously, and is guided back to camp. Oriolepaw sees that even her strict mentor is capable of fear and fault, and tries to offer comfort to an embarrassed Pantherstride, cuddling at her side even when the molly tries to escape her doting.[break] From there, she and Oriolepaw manage to work better together. She finds Oriolepaw's strengths in hunting, and encourages her where she is hesitant with battle training. She feels pride when Oriolepaw is named Orioleblossom beside her brother Newtfin.[break] What has not escaped her attention is the deterioration of Alderstar's mental health. Frequently conversing with him and discussing Oriolepaw's training, she has witnessed him wither from the prideful tom he was, growing paranoid and skeptical of his Clanmates, even his own children, telling Pantherstride how he worries for their future. When she asks what he means, he tells her all about how he was tired of waiting for StarClan to reach out to the Clans, when he had seen time after time again prayers go unanswered, no signs spared to forewarn trouble. Though she doesn't admit it to him, she finds she relates to some of his words - were Zinniastar and Mallowstar watching them, or had they turned a blind eye like their other ancestors had?[break] She isn't expecting it when he announces such a thing in front of the other Clans at the Gathering. She listens, horrified, as her Clanmates who had attended the Gathering repeat his words. Stands uncertain as his body is brought into camp, unsure of how to comfort her apprentice as she and her brother wail over his cold corpse.[break] Though she takes her appointed role as deputy with pride, she cannot find comfort knowing what his stunt has done to the Clans, nor does she know what she will do with her own fizzling faith in StarClan.
